First Visit To Social Media Cafe
Having added a few strings to my Digital Marketing bow over the years, I’ve made it my mission to immerse myself in more social media in 2011. There is more to it than just having a profile on Twitter and Facebook so the first port of call was to get down to Social Media Cafe Manchester.
Social Media Cafe (SMC) is “A place for the people of Manchester, UK who are interested in Social Media to group together to learn, teach and meet.”
Last night’s session was held at the BBC – the setup was pretty relaxed and made for good networking surroundings – upon arrival I saw a few familiar faces and had social media talk with @MichelleDigital (who tells me South By South West is THE Social Media Conference to attend, though she won’t be doing), met @joannahalton in real life for the first time after more than one Twitter Chat and met @benfurber – spent a good hour or some chatting all things digital and social media, so on that front, SMC did what it said it would.
The general agenda for SMC is 2 sessions followed by networking.
The first session on this occasion was regards the organising of the next Manchester Twestival which takes place on March 24th. At this stage they are looking for help with the organisation of the event in terms of, well, everything – so I will be looking to lend a hand in some capacity.
This was followed by three guys from City Camp Manchester (CCM) telling us about their forthcoming event. CCM is “Where Gov 2.0 goes local in UK’s 2nd City – Manchester. A free event in July 2011.” They will be using Social Media to define and facilitate the event, which like Twestival is still in the early planning stages, for more info on this check out their website:
All in all, I enjoyed the event in terms of networking, the sessions were not what I was expecting – I thought the presentations would be more “educational” as opposed to discussing forthcoming events, though am sure that this agenda will vary on a month by month basis – so I will definitely be returning next month.
